History

Thornbury’s first carnival took place in 1935 as part of the official celebrations of King George V’s Silver Jubilee. For many years, the event featured a parade along the High Street followed by entertainment on the Mundy Playing Fields. In recent years, however, the format of the event has changed to a community music festival, but remains a much-loved event and one of the social highlights of Thornbury’s summer calendar, regularly attracting thousands of visitors. Thornbury Carnival continues to provide entertainment for children and adults alike, with a mix of music, stalls, and other entertainment across the Mundy Playing Fields.

Aims
  • To provide a memorable day out for residents of Thornbury and surrounding villages
  • To raise awareness of and funds towards the work of local good causes
  • To support local businesses by sourcing locally, wherever possible

Thornbury Carnival is a Community Interest Company (C.I.C.) and the event is organised and delivered by a small committee of volunteers. Any profit is invested in the following year’s event or donated to local charities and support groups.

Community

Our nominated charity for 2023 is the Great Western Air Ambulance Charity (GWAAC), and members of GWAAC will be attending the event to collect donations to support their vital work. You can find out more information about GWAAC here and in the video below:

Previous supported organisations include:

Krunch – Running a facility for young people in the local area, the Youth Hub at Thornbury Skate Park, focusing on positive activities and emotional well-being.

Jigsaw Thornbury – A small group set up by parents to support families with children and young people with any additional needs ranging from dyslexia to complex disabilities or health problems.
